"I just bought a house that was built in 1850," she told Newsweek. "I'm currently removing all of the flooring, and they had been used as liner above the original pine boards.

"I lifted about six layers of flooring and they were there. Three rooms and there was just a lot of them. I started putting that back together and reading them and just found it very interesting to see what was happening 100 years ago and learning about the people that had lived in this house over that time.

"Most of the papers still have the address label on them for the addressee," she said.

In her post, the Reddit user shows the headlines on the papers with stories about the stock market crash. She wrote in the post: "These are all 1929... the year of the stock market crash before the Great Depression."

The Great Depression started that year in the U.S., with high unemployment, soaring prices and increasing rates of poverty, and spread worldwide.

Other Reddit users shared their thoughts and reactions to the discovery in the comments section.

"Wow those are in great condition," said u/MissHibernia, to which the poster replied: "Some are in better condition than others. These were under 6 layers of flooring but in the highest traffic area in the house and still pretty great condition considering they've been there for about 100 years."

User u/Souta95 wrote: "I find the stock market headlines especially interesting considering these predate the crash that started the great depression."

Meanwhile, u/rofnorb suggested: "Great find! Check to see if any universities or historical societies are looking for old newspapers! My state's historical society preserved hundreds of old newspapers in part by retrieving old newspapers from house demolitions. You can save history by preserving these newspapers."
