The New York Yankees need to add a few more players to their roster to finalize the Juan Soto backup plan that went into motion once Soto signed with the New York Mets.
The Yankees have two options. One, they can play Cody Bellinger at first base and bring in an additional outfielder. Two, they can play Bellinger in the outfield and bring in a first baseman.
Leo Morgenstern of MLB Trade Rumors recently listed the Yankees as "likely suitors" for New York Mets star first baseman Pete Alonso. Alonso is projected to sign a $152 million deal, per Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
"However, MLB Network's Jon Morosi recently suggested the Yankees would prefer to sign a first baseman on a shorter deal, describing Walker as 'more of a priority,' " Morgenstern wrote. "Nonetheless, it certainly seems like Alonso is still on the table in the Bronx. That should be true even after the Yankees acquired Cody Bellinger from the Cubs on Tuesday. Bellinger can play first base, but he's more useful to the team in the outfield; he can play center field, allowing Aaron Judge to move back to right. Thus, this team could still use a replacement for Anthony Rizzo at first."
While a move for Alonso would be the most exciting move for New York to make, it's not the most likely. The Bronx Bombers have already spent quite a bit of money this winter, so saving some cash on a deal for Christian Walker would make much more sense.
Still, if the Yankees whiff on Walker and Alonso is still available, it's hard to imagine any of the other top suitors beating the Yankees in a bidding war, especially after Juan Soto drained the Mets' pockets.
