The entire baseball world was flipped on its head Tuesday night when the Los Angeles Dodgers reportedly agreed to terms on a deal with left-handed pitcher Blake Snell.
Now, the rest of the league is left to make their own moves in an attempt to match the Dodgers. For the Yankees, that would be bringing Juan Soto back, but there are more moves to be made after that.
Christopher Kline of FanSided put together a list of three budget-friendly moves for the Yankees to make with Soto's $600 million contract in mind. The top move on the list is swinging a trade for Chicago White Sox ace Garrett Crochet. Crochet is on his rookie deal through 2026, but he's projected to land a six-year, $130 million deal when he eventually hits free agency.
"Garrett Crochet is still on his rookie contract through 2026, although he's going to want a new deal upon his arrival in New York. And that's fine," Kline wrote. "While Crochet is due to receive a pretty penny, he's not going to receive the same historic AAV as Snell. He's also going to provide a longer window of value for New York at 25 years old. There's a chance for Crochet to grow with the Yankees for the next decade."
The Yankees haven't been involved in any of the initial Crochet trade rumors, but this Snell signing could drastically change everything. If the Yankees can find a way to trade for Crochet while having a livable farm system left, then I'd say go for it.
But making the deal with such a depleted farm system already would be quite tough. New York would likely have to part ways with one of its highly coveted minor league assets.
