Al Murray says vandals smashed his car up and stole his Pub Landlord costumes

Comedian Al Murray has blasted "scrotes" who stole his Pub Landlord costume after smashing in through the boot of his car.

The stand-up comedian and actor took a photo of the smashed glass of his boot window, writing on Twitter: "Congratulations to the thief who will soon be dressing up as the Pub Landlord." He tagged in the Met Police, and in replies to concerned fans, he revealed it happened in Brentford, West London and wasn't his car, but a hire car.

He'd played his character on Thursday night at Aldershot's Princess Hall, joking there will be a "whole gang of Landlord scrotes", since the thieves took a number of his character's white shirts. Al's character - The Pub Landlord - is an English pub owner, who wears white shirts with red jackets.

Al's fans responded with anecdotes and support, with one replying: "Sorry to hear it. Hopefully it'll all be found in a plastic bag behind a toilet somewhere like when my notes were stolen at uni. There's only one word in this case..."

Another gutted fan said: "Hang on… You mean the pub landlord is a character!" Noting the Mercedes, a fan joked about the Pub Landlord's dislike of Germany and France, writing: Sorry that your car was broken into. P.S. Well done for driving a solid German car..." The Mirror has contacted the Met Police but the force has declined to comment.

Although Al is active on social media now, often interacting with his fans, the star's experience of connecting with his audience was "wrecked" when an over-zealous fan became a stalker. Lucy Bird, 46, sent unwanted letters and parcels to Murray, 52, and told him 'I know where you live'. She also repeatedly tried to get backstage when the Pub Landlord performer was on tour and even shockingly obtained photos of his children.

Al gave evidence that Bird’s actions left him feeling "distressed", writing in a statement: "This was very concerning for me as she had previously stated she knew where I lived. I always felt pestering me was one thing but targeting my family was completely wrong. The wife of a business partner of mine received a Christmas card with the words ‘I know who you are'."

The comedian said Bird also "wrecked" his experience of using social media to connect with his fans. He added: "This contact is causing me distress…the actions Bird has taken have wrecked my experience with social media. I am active on both Facebook and Twitter and this is a vital outlet for me that enables me to connect with fans. But I feel a lot less comfortable using it for feeling like she is going to be there.”

Bird posted bizarre objects to Al, including hair grips, baked goods, condoms and religious quotes. She also horrifyingly sent a picture of one of his children as a toddler. Bird unsettled Al so much that a photo of her was circulated amongst security staff at any venue he played. Bird was convicted in 2021 after pleading guilty to two counts of harassment and one count of stalking.
