Countryfile: Adam Henson on sending ewes off to market
Countryfile star Adam Henson had some emotional news to share with fans as he welcomed a new arrival on his farm.
The BBC agricultural expert took to Instagram at the weekend to show an adorable birthing video that had his social media followers rushing to show their support.
As he approached a herd of Albion cows, Adam soon realised one had actually given birth to a calf, who was still trying to find his feet in the muddy field.
Adam explained that the rare breed of cattle come in black, white and blue, explaining: “This lovely white cow here has just given birth to an adorable little heifer calf.”
The cow was busy licking its calf clean, as Adam explained: “It’s covered in amniotic fluid, birth fluid, that she’s licking, and I can see the colour now and it’s a blue colour. What she’s trying to do is encourage it to get up on its feet to drink the first milk – that colostrum, that essential [milk]. She’s having a big yawn!

“She’s getting quite tired, there’s a good girl!” he encouraged the mother cow. Adam began to walk over the field to reach the new arrival, explaining he needed to spray the umbilical cord, which breaks naturally.
“It’s an open wound,” Adam explained, “and a site of potential infection, so I’m just putting on a bit of antiseptic spray.”
Adam confirmed that he’d be leaving the calf alone once it was up on its feet, returning in an hour to check it had succeeded in suckling. In a sweet caption on his Instagram post, the Countryfile host added: “It’s a privilege to see this rare breed continue to thrive on the farm.”

Fans soon turned up in force in the comments section, with one gushing: “How lovely!” As someone else agreed: “What a beautiful little miracle.”
Somebody else chimed in: “Well done – dangerous work with a new mum. I’ve jumped a few gates after calving a protective mother!”
While a fourth social media user wondered: “At what stage do they come in from the elements, or are they tough enough to stay outdoors during the winter?”
