A British icon looked unrecognisable as she enjoyed a sun-soaked getaway.

Comedy legend Dawn French took to social media to post a video, where she quipped about her attempts to speak Italian and Spanish. However, it didn't quite go as planned - as she relented and said: "Chips, please."

In the hilarious video, Dawn looked relaxed and like she was enjoying the sun as she attempted to say various Italian and Spanish words, before giving up and speaking English, leaving fans in hysterics.

It is not known where Dawn is on holiday but it looks like she has been having a lovely time, with fans sharing their reactions to her post. One wrote: "Your Spanish is almost as good as mine and I’ve lived here for 5 years," as another shared: "I mean at this point there’s no telling you apart from the locals." A third added: "This is so simple and silly yet so genius and hilarious! This should be a character with her own series like Mr Bean!!"

Away from her holiday, Dawn recently signed up to a new sitcom for the BBC called Can You Keep A Secret? Dawn stars as widow Debbie Fenton in the show, who will stop at nothing to make sure her family is protected.

Dawn, who stars alongside Mark Heap in the hit show, said: "At last, a sitcom where I can keep my top on... mostly." The storyline actually sees Debbie fool her family and friends over the death of her husband William (played by Mark), as he is actually very much alive. The pair have hatched a plan to hide out in the loft until the life insurance pays out - but it's never that simple.

The comedian recently underwent a hair transformation and decided to go grey, with a much shorter cut.

She told Good Housekeeping of her new style: "The real trigger came during the lockdowns when I was dying my hair myself, and I just couldn’t be bothered to keep doing it, so I let my natural grey come through.

"I also cut some of it myself - to my hairdresser's alarm! It’s much shorter than I’m used to now and I do have certain ‘grrr’ moments when I’m going out and I don’t know how to style it - I would literally give my old hair 13 minutes of my time each day - but the plan is to grow it again like my old hairstyle. I’m curious to see what the bob might look like with a good strong grey."
