In case you missed it, John Mulaney hosted Saturday Night Live for the sixth time this past weekend. And while the episode was filled with iconic moments, including an opening with special guest Vice President Kamala Harris, there’s one moment from the night that stuck out to Brooke Shields.
As it turns out, one of Mulaney’s bumper photos was him replicating Shields’ iconic Calvin Klein ad from 1980. In the original photo, a 15-year-old Shields looks fiercely at the camera wearing a half-unbuttoned red corduroy top paired with dark denim jeans and a black bootie. For her pose, Shields is lifting herself off the floor and kicking one leg up in the arm.

In Mulaney’s photo, the comedian perfectly recreated the ensemble with a red button-down top, dark denim jeans and black heels boots. Of course, he replicated the pose too.
“I see no difference…,” Shields wrote on Instagram alongside a collage of the two pictures. “I guess they can be your Calvins too, @johnmulaney 👖🤣.”
In the comment section, fans aren’t shy about comparing the two shots. “John didn’t point his toe – minus three points on style,” one commenter wrote. “This is amazing but u need to school him on the toe point 🩰😘🔥,” echoed another. “He’s wearing Levi’s! 😂” another wrote.
As a reminder, Shields’ Calvin Klein campaign –in which she said the iconic line “You want to know what comes in between me and my Calvins? Nothing”– received a lot of backlash at the time for its sexual nature.

“I was away when they came out, and then I started hearing that the commercials were being banned,” Shields once looked back to Vogue. “The paparazzi would scream at me and my mother, ‘How could you!” It just struck me as so ridiculous.”
“I didn’t think it was about underwear or sexual in nature. I was naive,” Shields added. “I think the assumption was that I was much more savvy than I ever really was. I was a virgin, and I was a virgin forever after that.”
“The controversy backfired,” she then continued. “The campaign was extremely successful, and then the underwear overtook the jeans. [Calvin Klein] understood how to push the envelope. It set the tone for decades.” Despite the backlash, we’re just glad Shields can laugh about it now!
