Band Coldplay performed for the first time without its full line-up this week after bass player Guy Berryman fell "very, very sick" shortly before a concert in Australia.

The group performed at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne on Wednesday as part of the world tour Music of the Spheres. Lead vocalist Chris Martin, 47, however announced at the concert that Guy, 46, would not be performing.

Footage shared by fans on social media shows Chris telling the audience that bass player Guy was "vomiting" and would not be on stage. Chris and bandmates Jonny Buckland, 47, and Will Champion, 46, then performed without him.

Chris said: "Our bass player, Guy, is very very sick and will not be, for the first time ... he's not gonna be able to play today. So we'll have a slightly different show and we'll do our best to make it amazing, and I know that it will be amazing, because we're in Melbourne with all of you beautiful people."

He went on to warn of potential "mistakes" due to Guy's absence, revealing that the band had "about an hour" notice to address the situation. Chris told the crowd: "If you see some mistakes [or] problems, it's because we don't have our bass player and we only had about an hour to figure it out."

Coldplay - which formed in 1997 - expressed gratitude to the audience in a post shared on Instagram after the concert. It was stated that it marked the "first time" that the band had played without all four of its members.

Alongside a photo from the tour, the band wrote in the post: "Thank you Melbourne. Tonight was the first time in our band's history that we've played a show without all four members onstage. Guy was taken ill unexpectedly just before the show. Thank you for carrying us through."

The post prompted well wishes from fans in the comments section, with one reaction reading: "Get well soon, Guy! We love you so much." Whilst someone else wrote: "All the best for Guy! I hope he makes a speedy recovery."

A third person commented: "Get well soon Guy, sending you lots of get well wishes and lots of love." Another follower responded to the news this week: "I hope Guy gets better soon." And one fan wrote: "Speedy recovery, Guy."

Coldplay have three more dates at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne, with them set to perform at the venue again on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. It's hoped that Guy will return for the gigs, though there's been no confirmation yet.
