The announcement of the Golden Globe nominations means awards season has officially begun. Regularly an indicator of the films and actors in consideration for the big prize, the Academy Award, the Globe nominations offer us an insight into where the awards season stands and, more importantly, where it might be going. And right now, it looks like the Netflix musical Emilia Pérez is a big contender while Wicked and Gladiator II fell short of expectations.
But before we get into that, make sure you're subscribed to the For the Culture newsletter for all things entertainment and to the Parting Shot Podcast with H. Alan Scott for celebrity interviews and reactions to what's going on this awards season.
In the film categories, the big takeaway from this morning's announcement was Emilia Pérez dominance over many categories. The Jacques Audiard musical drama picked up 10 nominations across most of the categories, including for its stars Selena Gomez, Zoe Saldana and Karla Sofia Gascón. The Brutalist and Conclave followed up with seven and six nominations, respectively.
While Wicked was nominated in major categories–including Best Picture Musical or Comedy and for its stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande–but fell short in any of the other categories, most notably for director John M. Chu.
But the biggest surprise of the morning is how poorly Gladiator II performed. The sequel to Gladiator, which picked up the Best Picture Oscar back in 2000, only picked up two nominations, one for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement and another for Denzel Washington for Supporting Actor.
Other snubs include Clarence Maclin for Sing Sing and Danielle Deadwyler for The Piano Lesson.
In the TV categories, The Bear continues to dominate year after year, picking up five nominations. Following that are Only Murders in the Building and Shōgun, with four nominations.
The 82nd Golden Globes, hosted by Nikki Glaser, will air on January 5 on CBS and Paramount+.
