James and Chloe called it quits last year, and the rugby pro explained why it had to end

James Haskell, 39, has opened up about his private life and his marriage to Chloe Madeley , 37.

The former couple tied the knot in 2018, and welcomed a daughter, Bodhi, in 2022 before calling it quits last year. James revealed the real reason why they split up, and also talked about his past controversies.

Former rugby union pro James admitted that his relationship with Chloe was simply “not working”, with this leading to their separation. He added that he had no intention of ever splitting up with Chloe, and tried his best to keep the marriage together before accepting it was over.

Despite their differences, James didn’t hold back in fawning over his ex-wife. James described her as intelligent and “utterly brilliant,” and also complimented her for being a great mum to their daughter.

The former I’m a Celebrity contestant also touched upon his current dating life, but didn’t leak any major details. James simply noted that despite sometimes being photographed with women, he’s “not dating any of them,” suggesting that he might still be single after his split from Chloe.

After addressing his love life, James moved on to talk about a more controversial topic. Back when he was a teen he was suspended from his exclusive school, Wellington College, after being involved in a sex tape scandal.

“My friend was sleeping with a girl. He asked me if I had a camera. I said, ‘Yeah.’ We set it up in a cupboard. Obviously, that was wrong. One of our classmates sold the story and then we were on the front pages. Would I do it again? No. But it’s difficult as a 17-year-old in a boarding school because you just think something will be funny,” he said of the incident.

James claimed to The Times that he was simply “stupid” for taking part in the wrongdoing rather than rebellious, and also admitted that he grew up in a “pretty privileged” environment.

With James now decades on from his school scandal, he recently hinted that he wouldn’t be opposed to opening up more to the public on reality TV. James revealed that he was invited onto Strictly Come Dancing, but chose not to take part in case the “Strictly curse” hit his then-marriage to Chloe. However, he said that he wouldn’t be opposed to taking part in some other shows.

“I would definitely do reality TV again. I'd be really keen to do it. I just think some of the formats have been done to death now and I would like to do something that was slightly different. Loads of rugby players have done Strictly and I just think it’s a bit of a minefield at the moment with everything that’s going on there. I’d love to do Celebrity SAS. I'm just a massive show off and performer,” he shared.
