Jennifer Lopez Graciously Reacts to Interviewer Telling Her She’s ‘Getting Up There’ in Age: ‘I Am’

Jennifer Lopez is handling an interviewer’s comment about her age with grace.

During Variety’s Jennifer Lopez Career Retrospective on Sunday, December 15, the outlet’s senior awards editor, Clayton Davis, said, “Listen, I can’t believe it’s been 30 years since Selena. I can’t believe that 30 years we do the retrospective of this and you will be 60 by then,” as seen in a video published by TMZ on Monday, December 16.

The “Jenny From the Block” hitmaker, 55, interjected to say, “Wow,” as Davis added that her age was “getting up there.” J. Lo simply nodded and responded, “I am.”

Though Davis’ remark earned some laughs from the audience, others were left confused. One person could be heard saying, “Did he really just say that?”

Davis then complimented J. Lo’s performance in her latest film, Unstoppable, which was released in September, calling it “one of [her] best.”

“It’s funny you think that I’m getting up there,” the Atlas star said as Davis interjected to clarify that his comment about her age was a “joke.” However, she seemingly brushed it off and continued, “It’s because I want to say thank you, you guys. Because we’ve been doing this a long time together. Been doing it a long time and you guys have been here with me. Today, I was singing some new songs and I went back and sang ‘If You Had My Love,’ which is my first song, 1999. It’s that thing, of like, what a journey this has been.”

J. Lo added, “I honestly feel that the best is yet to come. I honestly feel that my creativity and who I am as an artist — like you said, I also feel that this, for me, was another kind of level for me of going deeper into who I am as a person, as an artist.”

The “On the Floor” singer, who is currently going through a divorce from estranged husband Ben Affleck, added, “These types of roles change you, in a way, when you allow them to because they come to you at times in your life when you need them, and they help you grow and they heal you in a way.”

“And if you can kind of let yourself be vulnerable enough and real enough to show you flaws and to really expose yourself in a way, as an artist, that is a gift that you always want,” she said. “You want to have that.”

J. Lo concluded, “For me, that’s what my life is about. Making things that are beautiful and entertaining, but also let people know that love is what matters and that you’re not alone. That we’re all in this together.”

In Touch exclusively reported on May 15 that J. Lo and Ben, 52, were “headed for a divorce” and that the Good Will Hunting actor had already “moved out” of their Beverly Hills mansion.

“The writing is on the wall – it’s over,” the insider said, noting that Ben was “not to blame.”

J. Lo filed for dissolution of marriage on August 20, In Touch confirmed at the time. She listed their date of separation as April 26.

J. Lo broke her silence on the divorce in an October 9 interview with Nikki Glaser for Interview magazine, explaining, “I was thinking about this time in my life, and I’m like, ‘That’s not what I thought it was going to turn out like.’ And then I thought, ‘No, this is exactly where I needed to be, to lead me to where I want to go.’”
