The 83-year-old businesswoman and writer, dubbed the “original influencer”, was on the show to promote new Netflix documentary Martha.
Veering off topic, Barrymore asked her, “what makes you soft and gooey?” while placing one of her fingers in her mouth.
“Soft and gooey treatment,” Stewart responded.
“Soft and gooey treatment?” Barrymore repeated, starting to stroke her guest’s arm.
“When you’re treated like a lady,” Stewart clarified. “It’s nice”.
“When someone comes in …” Barrymore began before being cut off by Stewart who pushed her away and remarked, “You’re the wrong gender!”
Barrymore dramatically fell back on the couch, adding, “I known, I know”.
“Although the way it’s going with men though, Martha, I’m not so sure anymore,” she added.
It is not the first time Barrymore has appeared to get a little too close and personal with her guests on The Drew Barrymore Show.
In May, US Vice President Kamala Harris appeared as a guest on the show, just a few months before President Joe Biden withdrew from the presidential race and Harris became the Democratic nominee.
Barrymore called Harris “Momala,” a family nickname her stepchildren called her privately, attracting widespread criticism for her perceived lack of respect for the office of vice president.
She went on to add: “I keep thinking in my head that we all need a mum. I’ve been thinking that we really all need a tremendous hug in the world right now.”
Barrymore slid closer to Harris on the couch and said: “But in our country, we need you to be Momala of the country.”
Grabbing onto the vice president’s hands, she smiled at the host uncomfortably.
Another famously awkward moment came during her 2023 interview with Oprah Winfrey during which the two talk-show hosts discussed the business as Barrymore sat with her legs curled, holding on to her guest’s hand.
Barrymore began her career as a talkshow host in September 2020, with her show distributed by CBS.
She rose to fame as a child star and has had continued success in her adult years, with some of her biggest hits including ET, Scream, Charlie’s Angels, Blended and Never Been Kissed.
