This Election Day will be one of the closest races in U.S. history, but one person might not be as excited as their husband, who is running for president. Melania Trump, who made limited campaign appearances for Donald Trump, probably won’t be jumping for joy if her husband returns to the White House.

There seems to be a disconnect between the public’s expectations of the First Lady of the United States, an unpaid role, and Melania’s desire to lead a private life. “If Melania becomes first lady again, of course, people expect her to move into the White House and perform appropriate duties,” a source told People while noting that she will likely not make Washington, D.C. her home base if the former president is elected again.

“She will have her private living apartment there, and she has her home in New York, and her home at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach,” they added. “She will spend time in all of these places.” A second insider pointed out that Donald Trump’s political aspirations are a part of his agenda, not hers. “This is not what she signed up for,” they claimed.

Kate Andersen Brower, author of First Women: The Grace and Power of America’s Modern First Ladies, spoke to SheKnows in August 2023 and noted Melania’s reticence about the first lady role. “I always felt that she didn’t want to be the first lady, and she was unapologetic about it,” Brower said. “She wasn’t interested in doing what we expected of her.”

Brower believes that the former first lady “lowered the bar” during Donald Trump’s administration and that there probably won’t be much more from her if they get a second chance in Washington, D.C. “We don’t expect to see or hear from her. If we do, it’s surprising,” she added.

Melania is going to follow her own path this time if Donald Trump wins. He will more than likely be a solo president while she takes on a part-time role on an as-needed basis. It sounds like Melania is done with living out somebody else’s dreams.
