A survey of 2,000 adults has revealed that Britons will indulge in an average of 96 baths a year - equating to more than 6,000 over their lifetime.

A significant 65% confessed their love for a relaxing dip in a warm tub despite acknowledging the speedier option of a shower.

Interestingly, one in 10 even admitted to having three or more baths in a single day. Late Sunday night emerged as the ideal time for a soak, with the water temperature averaging a steamy 39.8 degrees.

The study was commissioned by British Gas to celebrate the launch of its same day boiler service. The company also announced Olympic gold medallist Tom Daley as its 'Nice Bath' Ambassador, promoting the joys of warm baths.

Daley commented: "I've had quite a few ice baths in my time as an athlete but now that I'm retired, I can enjoy a nice warm bath. Broken boilers are nobody's idea of a good time, especially when the weather's already freezing outside.

"Just thinking about stepping into a cold shower or bath is making me want to go and put my dressing gown on."

The survey also found that almost a quarter prefer their bathwater to be as hot as they can tolerate between 43 and 45 degrees, with 19% always using their elbow first to check the temperature. In the unfortunate event of no hot water at home, 17% would resort to using their gym membership solely for a hot shower.

Additionally, 12% would even consider asking a neighbour if they could use their bathroom for a scrub down.

Bath time favourites include getting lost in thoughts of a lottery win (19%), indulging in a tasty drink (18%), or unwinding with meditation (17%).

Interestingly, 12% have bravely taken an ice bath, while 21% are curious to try it but a resounding 64% refuse to take the plunge, according to OnePoll.com data.

A British Gas spokesperson commented: "We know how much Brits value bath time, so now is the time of year to check your boiler is in tip-top condition, or you may find yourself sheepishly standing at a neighbour's door in your towel."

"Boiler care should be a year-round priority, and regular maintenance over the summer can help avoid issues during the colder months."

"However, when your boiler does break down-which can happen to anyone-getting it repaired quickly is essential."
