Safiyya Vorajee broke down as she shared the emotional tradition of decorating her daughter Azaylia’s ‘garden’ after her tragic passing.

Azaylia, the daughter of Safiyya and former footballer Ashley Cain, passed away from leukaemia at just eight months old in 2021. Attending the Children with Cancer Gala yesterday, Safiyya fought back tears as she talked about decorating the garden for Christmas.

In an exclusive interview with The Mirror, Safiyya, 37, revealed: “I decorate my daughter’s garden, her resting place, her garden.” Struggling to hold back tears, she continued: “With all of her Christmas decorations."

Explaining the emotional toll it takes, Safiyya added: “For me, I’ve had such a hard time. I’m there decorating her garden, doing all of the Christmas stuff. I don’t even do it at home, I just go to hers and do it there.”

We also asked how often Safiyya decorates Azaylia's garden, to which she replied: “I do it all the time. I do it on her birthday, Easter, Halloween, Christmas. I always decorate her space because it’s somewhere where I put my pain into.”

Safiyya spoke about what drives her to attend charitable events, even on her toughest days after the loss of her daughter. She explained how, despite feeling overwhelmed, she feels compelled to continue supporting the cause: “We’re making such a change in childhood cancer, so for me it’s like, why wouldn’t I turn up?” She reflected on how hard it is to be at these events while struggling personally, adding: “If I’m feeling bad, how are these other children feeling? They’re fighting for their life.”

For Safiyya, the need to show up outweighs her own down days. “Why can’t I turn up? Get up, do your makeup and hair, put a dress on and get out that front door”, she said.

Safiyya and Ashley parted ways almost a year after their daughter's death but reportedly remained friends. Last year, Ashley welcomed a baby boy with another woman. He explained that the two aren't in a relationship but added they have been friends since the age of 18. Earlier this month, Ashley confirmed he was set to welcome another child.

Taking to Instagram last week to announce his baby joy, the proud dad posed alongside his son Aliyas as he held up a scan in front of the tot. Alongside the picture, Ashley penned: "Another One" - DJ Khaled Voice. My little girl will soon have another little brother to watch over, and my little boy will not only be a baby brother, but a big brother too.

"With all the heartache I've been through, I'm truly grateful that I can really start counting my blessings again. Now it's time to head to two of the most dangerous places in the world to film the final two episodes of my brand new series. So for now, I'm sad to say goodbye, but I look forward to seeing you both soon, my little men. And to my guardian angel, I'll never ever be without you because I can feel your presence in every step I take."

Ashley concluded the post: "Life has a way of throwing challenges our way, but it also blesses us with moments that fill our hearts with immense joy. Here's to the journey ahead and the beautiful souls who make it worthwhile."
