Squid Game star, Lee Joo-Sil, has sadly died after being diagnosed with stomach cancer in November

One of the stars of Netflix smash-hit, Squid Game, has died three months after being diagnosed with cancer.

Lee Joo-Sil played Park Mal Soon, mother of Hwang Jun Ho (Wi Ha Joon) and stepmother of Hwang In Ho (Lee Byung Hun) in the second season of the Netflix smash-hit. The actress, 81, was diagnosed with stomach cancer in November and sadly died today at her family home in the South Korean city of Uijeongbu, national paper The Chosun Ilbo reports.

Fans of Squid Game have flocked to social media following news of the actress' passing, with one posting on X, formerly Twitter: "Omgggggg noooo my favourite grandma may her soul rest in peace." Another said: "May her soul rest in peace" while a third shared: "She was such a phenomenal actress. Rest in peace." Meanwhile, a fourth added: ‘Veteran actress Lee Joo-Sil has sadly passed away after battling stomach cancer. Known for her role in Squid Game 2 and decades of iconic performances, she leaves behind a lasting legacy. May she rest in peace."

Another fan also sent their condolences, sharing: "Actress Lee Joo Sil who played the role of Somun’s grandmother in The Uncanny Counter passes away today. Condolences [flowers emoji]. May she rest in peace [angel emoji]."

The Korean drama star was previously diagnosed with breast cancer 30 years ago and was given one month to live. The outlet reports that after fighting the disease for 13 years Lee was given the all-clear. However, in November, she was diagnosed with stomach cancer during a check-up. A funeral is to take place at Shinchon Severance Hospital in South Korea with a service on February 5.

The actress started her career back in 1964 and gained recognition as a voice actress as well as a performer. She is best known for her roles in the Korean TV series The Uncanny Counter and in the South Korean horror film Train to Busan.

Squid Games' second series has raked in over 126.2 million views since its release on December 26, smashing the record for the most views by a Netflix series in such a timeframe. A third season has now been confirmed by the streaming platform much to the delight of the show's legion of loyal fans.
