Fans all around the world are holding vigils in memory of former One Direction star Liam Payne, who tragically died on Wednesday after falling from the balcony of his hotel room in Argentina.

The 31-year-old singer, who was known for being one fifth of the mega-band and found fame as a teenager after appearing on The X Factor, passed away at CasaSur Hotel Palermo in Buenos Aires. His father Geoff travelled to Argentina's capital to arrange for his son's body to be repatriated to the UK, but currently, it's not known when it will happen.

Since Liam's death earlier this week, huge crowds of fans have gathered outside the hotel in Buenos Aires to pay tribute to him, leaving candles, cards and flowers for the late singer. "I didn't think he was going to die so young," 21-year-old Isabella Milesi said after Liam passed away.

"I've always loved One Direction since I was little. To see that he died and that there will never be another reunion of the boys is unbelievable, it kills me," said 18-year-old Juana Relh, another fan outside the Buenos Aires hotel.

But tributes didn't stop there, as fans in the UK and all over the world have organised vigils in memory of Liam this weekend. A memorial has already been held in his home city of Wolverhampton and in Liverpool.

Further gatherings are planned on Sunday in major cities including London, Manchester and Birmingham. Fans have also come together in Brussels, Belgium, Stockholm, Sweden, Bogotá, Colombia, Sydney, Australia, and Manila, Philippines.

In Wolverhampton, where Liam was born in 1993, around 100 people came together and bowed as flowers were laid outside St Peter's Church. Among the tributes was a photo of Liam as a child, surrounded by candles.

On Saturday, a group of Directioners gathered at the Keel Warf Bridge at Royal Albert Dock in Liverpool, holding cardboard signs with One Direction's lyrics on them. The group also sang songs from the boyband and left photos of Liam, flowers, teddy bears, and balloons at the bridge.

Liam first auditioned for The X Factor in 2008 at the age of 14 singing Frank Sinatra's Fly Me To The Moon, with judge Simon Cowell telling him to return to the ITV reality show at an older age. He impressed the judges in 2010 singing Michael Buble's Cry Me A River before he was put with four other solo hopefuls at the boot camp stage of the competition – the group which later became One Direction.
