In 2021, Joan Vassos lost her husband of 32 years to cancer. Three years have passed since Joan finished living out her vows, and now, she is gearing up to declare her next potential spouse on The Golden Bachelorette. Moving forward as a widow is not an easy task. Yet, Joan learned how to work through her grief, making room for her potential second act.
Oh. And for the record, I think that Joan will choose Chock Chapple.
Grief is heavy, as this season’s widowed Golden Bachelorette, Joan Vassos, knows full well
In an interview with PEOPLE, Joan touched on her Season 1 showing on The Golden Bachelor. Her time on this series was short-lived, as Joan sent herself home during week three. Family matters were calling, and Joan had to answer.
When Joan returned to filming, it was to star as the inaugural Golden Bachelorette. However, this proved difficult for Joan, as her heart remained with her late husband, John. Thankfully, this franchise gives its stars access to psychiatrists during their stays at the mansion.
Joan made an appointment to hash out her feelings once she realized that her heart still beat for her late spouse. Thankfully, her psychiatrist reminded her that her feelings were valid and okay.
“They said, ‘Picture it like you have a balloon in each hand. One is John, and one is this other person you have feelings for, and you don’t have to let go of this one to have this one also,’” Joan explained, recalling her counseling sessions. Overall, Joan “just needed to hear that it was okay” to move forward in a world where she “didn’t have to not love John anymore,” she stressed.
Thankfully, with these hired mental health professionals at the ready, Joan overcame her struggles. Her grief is in a much better place these days. But as to who she might have chosen as her next great love story, all we can do now is wait and see.
The Golden Bachelorette concludes on ABC this Wednesday, November 13, at 8/7c.
