Piers Morgan has issued a statement after Sir Keir Starmer called a video of a Labour MP seemingly punching a civilian “shocking”. The Prime Minister made the declaration following a pre-budget speech on Monday (October 28).
During a Questions and Answers session held after the speech, 62-year-old Starmer was asked whether he believed Mike Amesbury, 55, should resign as MP for Runcorn and Helsby. The call comes after the politician appeared to be caught punching a man on CCTV.
“I have seen the video footage, it's shocking," the Labour Party leader said. “We moved very swiftly to suspend him as a member.
“There is now a police investigation and in the circumstances you will appreciate there's not much more I can say about that." In response to Starmer's statement, former Good Morning Britain co-anchor Piers, 59, has had his say.
Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, the father-of-three wrote: “If people were jailed at Starmer’s urging for posting violent threats during summer riots, how on earth can he not demand same punishment for one of his MPs who actually committed awful violence?”

The post, issued to his 8.8 million social media followers, has garnered hundreds of comments from fans and critics, with one writing: “Spot on, Piers! Starmer’s double standards are off the charts, rules for everyone except his own MPs!”
Another typed: “I think we all know the answer to that. And it starts with BY and ends with Election.”
“Because he shouldn’t prejudice a criminal investigation,” argued someone else, while a fourth said: “Police are investigating. I thought it was innocent until proven guilty? If he’s guilty, then of course he should be punished.”
A fifth remarked: “You know the party has rules for sorting out issues so surely he can’t impact due process at the moment by commenting on an individual case?”
After footage circulated of Amesbury seemingly punching a man, the suspended MP has claimed he will “co-operate with any inquiries” regarding the apparent footage.

However, he added that he is “determined to remain an open and accessible MP for our community”.
“Last night, I was involved in an incident that took place after I felt threatened on the street following an evening out with friends,” he said in a statement, issued on Sunday (October 27).
“This morning, I contacted Cheshire Police myself to report what happened during the incident.
“I will not be making further public comment but will, of course, co-operate with any inquiries if required by Cheshire Police.”
In response, a spokesperson for Cheshire Police has confirmed that a 55-year-old man had been “voluntarily interviewed under caution by police in relation to this incident.”
They added: “He has since been released pending further enquiries.”
