The couple postponed their wedding so Shayne could take part in the TV dance contest

Former Coronation Street star Shayne Ward found himself in the Strictly dance-off last week despite not finishing in the bottom two when it came to the judges' scores.

Shayne and his professional partner Nancy Xu has danced a Cha Cha that didn't prove enough of a hit with viewers to avoid the dreaded replay.

But it was DIY SOS star Nick Knowles who was sent home, leaving the former X Factor winner to compete again this week.

Shayne, 39, is being cheered on every step of the way by his fiancée Sophie, 40 and their children, son Reign and daughter Willow.

The actor's other half encouraged him to take part in the TV dance contest and they even put their wedding on hold so he could take part. "It was actually Sophie who put me forward for the show," he said.

"For many years she's talked about Strictly, she loves, loves the show, so every year the music would come on and she'd whisper: 'You'd be good at this.'"

Shayne has enjoyed a varied career since finding fame on The X Factor but some jobs come with disadvantages. Opening up in a recent interview with Brood Magazine, Sophie said her most challenging time since becoming a parent was "when Reign was 6 weeks old and Shayne left for 3 months to do the show".

The "show" was Channel 5's The Good Ship Murder, which sees the star play a police detective on a Mediterranean cruise ship. "I don't think I spoke to him for 24 hours, purely because I was in shock," said Sophie, of the time Shayne found out he'd secured the role and would begin filming the following week. "Then of course I realised it was an amazing opportunity but having just had a baby, that was definitely the most challenging time."

Shayne said he was "heartbroken" to leave their newborn son so soon and admits being away from his children is the hardest part of acting. "Being in a country and not seeing them every day, as silly as it sounds I kept worrying that they might not remember me," he said.

Shayne and Sophie began dating in 2016 and got engaged at Christmas in 2017. "I had told Shayne that if he was ever going to propose I would love my family to be there," Sophie told OK!. "We were stood in the hallway - I was wearing pyjamas and my hair was tied up with a pair of knickers.

"Once the music [Barbra Streisand's I've Dreamed of You] Shayne came over and asked if he could have a dance with me. I suddenly though oh crap, he is going to ask me in front of everybody. I know it sounds weird as I'm an actor but I don't like being the centre of attention. But it was the perfect ending to our lovely Christmas."

The couple will be hoping for a different Christmas present this year - Shayne lifting The Glitterball Trophy.
