Timothée Chalamet gatecrashed his own lookalike contest on Sunday, much to the amazement of his fans.

The Hollywood A-lister, 28, was joined by a host of excitable doppelgangers in New York, who were dressed up as Willy Wonka and Paul Atreides from Dune, in homage to the roles the American-French actor has played.

Flanked by bodyguards, Timothée posed for photos with the colourful crowd, who looked quite giddy alongside the star while hoping to bag the $50 prize as the best lookalike. However, one of the hopefuls got arrested after police ordered the large group to leave Washington Square Park in the city. At least one contestant was taken away in handcuffs, though police did not immediately say why. Organisers were also slapped with a $500 fine for an “unpermitted costume contest”.

Commenting on the chaos, one witness said: “It started off as a silly joke and now it’s turned pandemonium." Sharing a clip of the doppelganger being carted away, another said on X, formerly, Twitter: "I don't know what’s crazier: 1) the fact that the REAL Timothee Chalamet showed up at the Timothee Chalamet lookalike contest OR 2) the fact a fake Timothee getting ARRESTED at the Timothee Chalamet lookalike contest." Following the fracas, most of the wannabe Chalamets and spectators relocated to a new park.

On a makeshift stage, set up by event organiser and YouTube personality, Anthony Pothe, the lookalikes were asked about their intentions with Kylie Jenner, who is rumoured to be dating the real-life Timothée. They were also asked to demonstrate French proficiency as well as what they would do to make the world a better place.

Eventually, the audience picked Miles Mitchell, 21, a Staten Island resident and college student as their winner. Dressed in a purple Willy Wonka outfit, he threw sweets from a briefcase to the pumped up crowd, before gushing: “I’m excited and I’m also overwhelmed. There were so many good lookalikes. It was really a toss-up.”

Timothée is currently in New York City shooting Marty Supreme, in which he plays Marty Reisman, who was a real life American table tennis champion, winning the U.S. singles championship in 1958 and 1960.

The actor was recently spotted in costume as Reisman with many of his fans sharing their excitement online about both his look and the film.

Sporting a pair of gold-rimmed glasses and a thin moustache, Timothee was almost unrecognisable with his slicked back hair, rocking a navy sweater vest over a pale green shirt.

Fans were quick to react to the new look, with one taking to X saying: "Timothee's always bringing the vibes! Can't wait" while another exclaimed: "I can barely recognise him, OMG."
