It’s hard to believe the Great British Baking Show, aka the Great British Bake Off, has been on for fifteen seasons now. And Paul Hollywood has been a judge for every one of them. He is infamous for expecting nothing less than perfection from the contestants. So, one could assume he’s probably left the set numerous times. However, the man known as the King of Bread has actually only left the set once. And it had to do with him being embarrassed because of his co-judge, Prue Leith.
Paul says he left the set for “10 minutes” because Prue was “embarrassing”
Paul and Prue play good cop and bad cop as judges. Prue looks to find the good in the bakes, while Paul likes to stare down the contestants with his icy blue eyes. Coincidentally, this makes it more exciting when he hands out one of his Hollywood handshakes of approval. But while Prue may be the good cop, she makes quite the cheeky remarks. Which, in turn, made Paul leave the set once.
He told Netflix’s Tudum all the details. Paul said it all started while baking some bread. He explained, “The problem is, it’s quite a tactile thing, bread-making or whatever. So certain shapes can look a bit rude on camera.” If you are guessing Paul is going to talk about a sausage role, you would be right.
Paul then joked about Prue, “She’s embarrassing. That’s what she is. I mean, Prue will say it, and I’m sure she’s saying it deliberately. We were doing sausage rolls, and she said to a guy, ‘I don’t think your sausage is big enough,’ and I just stopped and I said, ‘I’m sorry, I’ve got to leave for 10 minutes,’ so I walked out the tent.”
But Prue isn’t the only one who jokes around. Paul shared, “We all have a good sense of humor in the tent, and we all have a good laugh. I think that’s part of the magic of [the show]. The atmosphere in the tent is very jovial, it’s very happy, it’s very fun, so when someone says something to spark somebody else off, it just goes through it like wildfire.”
