Although noughties hit sitcom The Inbetweeners is famed for its awkward comedy, creators of the show deemed the unaired pilot too cringe-incuding to ever see the light of day.

But, thanks to the detectives of Reddit, a minute long snippet of the first ever episode - Baggy Trousers - has been leaked and fans can be grateful the show experienced a revamp before it aired.

Despite show bosses, and even James Buckley - who played Jay - wanting it to stay buried forever, the clip has given fans a look at what could have been. Baggy Trousers shows just two of the stars of the show, James Buckley and Greg Davies, who plays Mr Gilbert.

Instead of playing Jay, James depicts Neil - a casting decision that Reddit users are glad was changed, with Joe Thomas, Simon Bird and Blake Harrison, playing the roles of Simon Cooper, Will McKenzie, Neil Sutherland respectively in the actual show.

James reportedly owns one of the only complete copies of the episode, and has made it clear he never wants people to watch it, even posting an apology on social media when clips were shown in the Fwends Reunited anniversary episode. Reddit users were less than impressed with the "grim" pilot, with one saying: "Looks like something that would be on CBBC."

Another wrote: "To this pilot - you are grim, mate. At least the concept was reused and improved on. Also, it’s somehow funnier that Fit But You Know It was used at the end." A third added: "Crazy how good the actual cast is chemistry-wise," while another vented: "What the f*** is this s***. I'd never have watched that." Someone else wrote: "This is so GSCE Drama haha."

Meanwhile, there seems to be little to no hope of new Inbetweeners for fans of the show. Simon Bird dismissed rumours that regularly circulate. The actor, now 40, has spilled the beans on the future of an Inbetweeners reunion, a decade after the last film was produced. The Friday Night Dinner star disclosed that despite three series and two films, there are no plans for a reunion in the near future.

Simon stated: 'I'm afraid to be the one pouring cold water on this but it's not happening. I can tell you emphatically that there are no prospects of a reunion." He clarified that while the cast would be more than willing to reprise their roles, the decision wasn't theirs to make.

Simon added to the Mail: 'We'd be happy to but it's not up to us, it's up to the writers, Iain and Damon, and I know they're both very busy these days. It's not more likely to happen now than it was ten years ago I'm afraid. I think it was a comedy that inhabited a certain time and, well, I think I caused quite a storm on social media in a previous interview where I said it wouldn't be made now but I'm not sure it would. So no there have been no discussion about a new show or film.."
