According to CBS News, earlier in the day, the protest began on Olvera Street, making its way to City Hall before they all marched onto the freeway around 4 p.m. Per the outlet, people were seen lying down in the lanes as the crowd chanted, "Si, se puede," which translates to "Yes, you can" in English.
Many flew Mexican flags and held signs that read, "Nobody is illegal" and "Viva Mexico" as the cops stood and watched the proceedings.
The California Highway Patrol's Transportation Management Center closed lanes heading in both directions.
Authorities declared the event an unlawful assembly and made demonstrators disperse by moving toward them. By 8 p.m., protesters were cleared from the area.
"Anti-ICE demonstrators in Los Angeles, Calif., have reportedly been throwing objects at police officers. Authorities have declared the gathering an unlawful assembly," social media user Officer Lew alleged on X, formerly known as Twitter.
According to the outlet, the LAPD only reported one arrest and there were allegedly no injuries related to the demonstration.
"We're not criminals," attendee Sara Aguilar explained to the news organization. "We want to work. A lot of people just want to work, we all want to provide. I'm out here to represent for my people. I'm out here to be the voice for the people that have been silenced out of fear."
Similar rallies were held nationwide over the weekend in cities such as San Diego, Calif., and Dallas, Texas.
The gatherings come as the new commander-in-chief, 78, put his sweeping immigration policies into action.
"I will send troops to the southern border to repel the disastrous invasion of our country," Trump declared in his inaugural address.
Upon taking office on Monday, January 20, the businessman signed a slew of executive orders in relation to illegal immigration and refugee admissions. Despite the 14th Amendment, Trump also made it clear he wants to end birthright citizenship.
The Trump administration recently claimed more than 8,000 immigrants were taken into custody by federal agents since he was sworn back into office.
However, according to NBC News, many have been released back into the United States on a monitoring program.
"The agency's federal law enforcement officers do everything they can to keep our communities safe," an ICE representative said in a statement to the outlet. "In some cases, ICE is required to release certain arrested aliens from custody."
