The upcoming Netflix series Building the Band featuring former One Direction member Liam Payne may be put on hold in the wake of the singer’s tragic passing. It seems like the right move considering there is no rush to release the series and the sudden tragedy is still so fresh.
Liam served as a mentor in the UK-based competition series. His co-mentors were Pussycat Dolls alum and former X-Factor judge Nicole Scherzinger and Destiny’s Child singer Kelly Rowland. Former Backstreet Boy AJ McLean is the series host.
Liam Payne’s show is on hold but not shelved
“Netflix will sit down with Liam’s family when the time is right to speak about the series and when it can be released,” a source told The US Sun.
“There is no rush or pressure to release the show. It would simply be a beautiful tribute to Liam and capture him at his best in the months before his death.”
While it’s unclear when the series will be released sources ensure that it is only postponed and not shelved. Page Six reached out to Netflix but was unable to get a comment.
Liam tragically died in Buenos Aires, Argentina on October 16. Two months after filming for the show was completed. Nicole was one of the last people in contact with Liam before his passing as confirmed by composer Andrew Lloyd Webber.
“She mentored Liam from One Direction,” Andrew told Billboard while discussing Nicole’s recent accolades in Sunset Boulevard. “On the Wednesday when he died, she was still texting him that day.”
Nicole and Liam met when she was a judge on The X Factor UK in 2011. She had a hand in connecting him and his One Direction bandmates back in the day. She mourned him in a heartfelt tribute on her social media.
“Dear Liam,” she wrote. “I will forever cherish and treasure the time we shared together. From fifteen years ago when One Direction was born, right up until just a few weeks ago. I will forever remember the meaningful and joyful conversations we had.”
