What's New
Social Security payment dates for 2025 have been released by the Social Security Administration (SSA). In January, numerous payments will be made to tens of millions of beneficiaries who get retirement, survivor and disability benefits.
Why It Matters
Social Security benefits form the bedrock of income for an estimated 72 million Americans, with checks paid on a monthly basis. Retirement payments are issued throughout the month, and are determined by the claimant's birth date or the length of time they have been receiving benefits.
Supplemental Security Income (SSI), which supports elderly, blind and disabled individuals with limited income and assets, is typically paid on the first day of the month.
January also marks the first round of benefits that will be modified in line with the new Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA), which is 2.5 percent. The estimated average retirement benefit will increase by $49 a month, from $1,927 to $1,976, the SSA has said.
The maximum amount available to retirees who stop working at the Full Retirement Age of 67 is $4,018.
What To Know
The following dates apply to Social Security payments in January 2025:
Tuesday, December 31: Payments will be issued to those who collect Supplemental Security Income (SSI). This is a day earlier than the usual payment date on the first of the month since January 1 is a federal holiday. Benefits are always paid earlier in these cases.
"We do this to avoid putting you at a financial disadvantage and make sure that you don't have to wait beyond the first of the month to get your payment," the SSA said in a 2022 blog post. "It does not mean that you are receiving a duplicate payment in the previous month, so you do not need to contact us to report the second payment."
Friday, January 3: Payments for those who have been receiving Social Security retirement benefits since before 1997, and for all those who get SSI payments as well as retirement or survivor benefits.
Wednesday, January 8: Checks will be issued for retirement recipients born between the 1st and 10th of any given month.
Wednesday, January 15: Payments to those born between the 11th and 20th.
Wednesday, January 22: Benefits issued to recipients born between the 21st and 31st.
Friday, January 31: Like the beginning of January, the February SSI payment will be slightly earlier than usual as the regular date due to February 1 falling on a weekend.
The SSA says you should wait three working days before contacting the government agency if a payment hasn't arrived as expected. Payments are never made on weekends or on federal holidays.
