Along with the rest of the cast, Martin reprised his role as George Banks in the film's 1995 sequel, Father of the Bride Part II.
He also continued to be a favourite in Hollywood, scoring lead roles in the Cheaper by the Dozen franchise, the Pink Panther films, as well as Novocain, The Out-of-Towners and Housesitter.
Known for his comedic chops, Martin has also hosted the Oscars three times and the popular variety show Saturday Night Live 16 times.
He currently stars in the TV series Only Murders in the Building, alongside Selena Gomez and Father of the Bride co-star Martin Short.
However Martin announced in 2022 he was going to step away from acting roles once Only Murders in the Building comes to an end.
"When this television show is done, I'm not going to seek others. I'm not going to seek other movies. I don't want to do cameos. This is, weirdly, it," he told The Hollywood Reporter on August 10 2022.
Earlier this year, Martin was invited to star on SNL in the role of United States vice presidential candidate Tim Walz.
Martin turned down the offer, however, because "he's not an impressionist", he told the Los Angeles Times.
Martin, 79, divorced actress Victoria Tennant in 1994, and married writer Anne Stringfield in 2007. In 2012, they welcomed their first child, a daughter named Mary.
